Training Institute – 2023 Trainings

We are excited to be able to continue to offer this year’s Training Institute via Zoom. Please see below for upcoming speakers and details.

Wayside’s Training Institute offers professional development for our staff and interns, visiting professionals, families and caregivers of Wayside clients and the public. The institute is designed to enhance the delivery of mental health services to our clients, families and communities.

Our trainings feature experts in mental health, wellness, substance abuse, racial justice and activism and include a series devoted to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Our trainings are open to the public.

Training Format

All Zoom trainings start promptly at 9:30 a.m. Please download Zoom prior to the training or join via your browser.

Participants have the option to turn their camera off except during a breakout session and participants will be muted. Questions may be submitted via chat unless in a breakout session.

Closed captioning is available for all of the trainings English subtitles are available for all trainings. Participants who wish to use closed captioning/English subtitles must turn on closed captioning at the start of the training.

Cost

The fee for the public to attend trainings $60.00 (cash/check/credit at time of online registration). Family and/or caregivers of Wayside clients can attend at no charge if they are registered by a member of Wayside’s staff.

Continuing Education Credits

Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) are available at the conclusion of the training. One credit per hour of training will be awarded to MSW’s, LMFTs and LMHCs. CEU recipients must sign in and out at registration and attend the training in its entirety. No partial credit will be given.

  • Understanding the impact of History, Culture and Language when working with Latinx communities

  • Presenter:

    Ximena Soto, LICSW Director of Latinx Program @ BC School of Social Work

    Description:
    Part 1; 9:30-11:00
    Latinos are an important part of the nation’s overall demographic story and future. In this training participants will learn about the broad diversity that exists within and throughout Latinx communities. Participants will learn about some of the shared cultural norms that unite communities and have served as assets within many Latinx cultures. Attendees will also learn about tools, such as the DSM 5’s Cultural Formulation, that can be used to understand each client’s individual situation and worldview

    Part 2; 11-12:30
    For this portion of the training, participants will engage in the language they provide services in: Spanish. Attendees will explore the assets that bilingual/bicultural practitioners bring to clinical social work and how these skills can be utilized to adapt clinical interventions.

  • Most Effective Strategies for Parenting Through Negative Behaviors

  • Presenter:

    Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart

    Description:
    It’s common for parents and caregivers to be annoyed, irritated, and triggered by their children’s negative behaviors. What’s the real issue? Identify your mindset about children’s behaviors, and understanding why the behaviors are occurring in the first place. In this workshop, Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart will walk parents through the most effective strategies for parents based on her years as a pediatric psychologist and parent coach.

  • Helpful Parent Scripts for the Most Challenging Situations

  • Presenter:

    Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart

    Description:
    One of the most challenging situations for parents is knowing exactly what to say during specific parent-child interactions. It’s common for parents to feel lost when a child refuses to listen, makes a rude comment, or when a teen appears to be ignoring you. Helpful parent scripts can help parents feel more confident, competent, and effective during a variety of challenging situations. In this workshop, Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart will discuss her favorite parent scripts specifically curated from hundreds of parent coaching sessions and adjusted based on parent feedback.

  • Addressing Youth Suicide & Self-Injury

  • Presenter:

    Charity Chaffee LMHC

    Description:
    Participants will be exposed to a framework of collaborative harm reduction and things to avoid when working towards reduction of self-harm. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of managing risk, developing strategies that are effective for the client and other systems, and build comfort and knowledge around how to support families, including language to use and strategies for support. In this training providers will learn and develop a better understanding of how to navigate self-injury in various levels of the system (residential, family, individually with the client). This training will also explore bias and provider self-talk/reflection when working with clients who engage in self injury.
