August 3, 2020 —The Greater Lowell Community Foundation announced it granted $1,139,000 in emergency funding to 55 area nonprofits that are providing crucial assistance to the most vulnerable populations, including the elderly, low-income, and homeless in Greater Lowell who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“As we enter into the fourth month of this pandemic, we remain committed to doing all that we can to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations in our community,” said Jay Linnehan, president and CEO of the Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF), in announcing grants in July.

“Many of the families we serve were living paycheck to paycheck before COVID-19 and are now in a situation where they are making really tough financial decisions,” said Elisa Jacome, Lowell site director for Wayside Youth & Family Support Network, which provides mental health counseling and family support services to children, young adults, and families in Massachusetts.

“Parents are struggling to provide the extra meals that their kids would normally get in school and from summer programs.”

Wayside Youth will use the grant to purchase gift cards and clean the Lowell facility, which has been closed since March.
