Why Wayside's 5K4Kids is Important to Me

Yohanna Estime - Senior Shift Supervisor, Sudbury Street Program

1.       How long have you worked at Wayside and what is your current position?  Briefly describe your duties. – I’ve worked at Wayside for about 3.5 years.  I am the Senior Shift Supervisor on the Sudbury Street male unit which is a Residential Education and Intensive Group Home program. As the Senior Supervisor I manage the day to day activities, uphold the basic structure and routines of the milieu. Making sure all staff, as well as myself, preserves Wayside’s mission and values.

2.       Why is the 5K4Kids event important to your work? – In addition to my work at Wayside, I am a Crossfit coach and an athlete. I’ve competed in several competitions, raced in several races around the Boston area.  I can’t count the number of times I hear the boys at Sudbury Street say  they want to do more physical activities. To me, this annual event matches their level of interest and their enthusiasm for physical fitness. When we can engage with kids and support their interests, in only helps us with our work in building stronger connections. I strongly believe that we should encourage our youth to get involved in some type of fitness, sports, running, yoga or swimming.  It’s important to focus on physical health in addition to our work around mental health because they are so connected. I try to stress every day the importance of physical activity, healthy ways to fuel your body, and resting properly. As adults, we are teaching our youth the necessities in order for them to stay healthy and hopefully make healthier choices as they get older.

3.       What has your program been able to do with the funds that are raised from this event? With the money raised, Sudbury Street has been able to purchase needed school items such as supplies and backpacks. Historically we have also used a lot of the funding for holiday gifts. Last year we were able to use the funding to purchase supplies for fun activities such as intramural sports with ice cream socials, Halloween costume parties, talent shows, and a trip to Six Flags. We also had money to purchase additional sporting equipment for our summer programming and I was able to send a group from my unit to a Crossfit defense class for a month. The boys really enjoyed it and they are eager to attend other one!

4.       What would you like the greater community to know about the 5K4KIDS? Wayside’s 5K4KIDS is an awesome event for the kids, their families and the whole community!  Last year was the first time I ran the race and I can’t wait to do it again this year with some kids from Sudbury.  We had such a good turnout from last year, it was packed! It was very cool to see everyone from the different agency departments, as well as other folks from the community and their families. It’s definitely more than just a race, it brings the community together for a good cause. There are lots of fun kid activities. I hope the turnout is even greater this year!
